The Monday Muse: Door-to-Door Evangelism

Easter and Christmas can be times of great reflection for a person. In a culture such as America, the focus of Easter and Christmas can quickly shift from celebrating the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ to commercialism and materialism. If anything, these two holidays encourage and create more church visitors than any other time of the year. No matter what we think about evangelism as it relates to “getting people in the doors,” we cannot deny that both Easter and Christmas afford us great opportunities to share the gospel with many people who would normally not be seen near a church.

Evangelism is an important part of being a Christian. It isn’t simply something we do, but it is who we are. There are many methods of evangelism with a host of fervent proponents of each method. Growing up, the most commonly mentioned and practiced form of evangelism was door-to-door evangelism. I am sure we all have stories and experiences in the door-to-door method whether we were the evangelist or the evangelized. Times have changed since the advent of the door-to-door method and continue to change. It seems that every year that goes by brings with it a growing sense of skepticism relating to the “effectiveness” of door-to-door evangelism. So let us ponder and discuss the door-to-door method this week. Here’s your Monday Muse question:

Is door-to-door evangelism still a viable and effective method of evangelism today?

NCAA Tournament: Day 1

7936646.jpegWell…with Day 1 of tournament play in the books, there weren’t a whole lot of surprises. Some people might call Kansas St. taking down USC an upset (#11 beating #6) but I think that several people anticipated it. If Bill Walker and the rest of the Kats give Beasley this type of support the rest of the tournament, K-State could be a very dangerous team.

How about the 29 spot that Mississippi Valley St. put up against UCLA? One of my friends said something after our book study about MVSU having one of the worst defenses in the nation. I think it is safe to say that they also showed us one of the worst offenses as well. But hey, it’s not completely their fault. They were extremely over matched against the Bru crew. I have the Bruins going to the finals where they will meet North Carolina. In that game, I predict that Psycho T is going to put the hammer down on K-Love.

Speaking of Bruins, I must give a shout out to one of the local underdogs for a fantastic game last night. Belmont nearly pulled the rug right out from under the Dukies feet. I was only able to catch the first half, but it was one of the best halves of basketball that I have seen in a while. Belmont was bombing from the outside. Both teams were playing at a frantic pace and applying pressure defense the full length of the court. It was simply a fun game to watch. In the end, Duke pulled out the victory. However, we learned two things from this game. First, Belmont is continuing to solidify its program and assert itself as a top tier, small time Division I school. Second, Duke is extremely overrated and poses no threat to win the national championship. The lack of an inside game will eventually be too much to overcome. I have them going down to West Virginia.

All in all, Day 1 leaves us with a satisfied feeling. There were no huge upsets, just a couple of close calls. It will only get better from here. There is no better time than March Madness.

The Monday Muse: NCAA Tournament

7921596_18_2.jpgI should seriously start calling this The Tuesday Muse. I have been a little busy lately so I haven’t been keeping up as faithfully with my posts. Annie and I are in the midst of making some big life decisions so pray that the Lord will give us guidance and discernment.

Ok…on to question of the week. Since NCAA bracketology is in full effect, I thought up a two part question dealing with this year’s tournament.

1. Who will be the 2008 NCAA Basketball Champion?

2. Who is this year’s sleeper team?

In Part 1, you have to make your case for who you think will take home the trophy. I don’t just want to know who but why. In Part 2, you need to give us the team that you think could make an unexpected run deep into the tournament. Like Part 1, you need to also give us the reason.

Alright, you have your questions. Now…state your case.

We are the Beggars

My friend Matt Burns has written an excellent two part series (Part 1 and Part 2) that seeks to view the homeless through a biblical lens. He identifies several types of homeless people and then poses this question: ”So now I ask you , fine readers, what do you do? Do you give them the cash? Do you ignore them and walk on by?”

In Part 2, Matt writes about the similarities between the homeless and everyone else on this planet. We approach God for salvation like the homeless approach people for money on the street. As Brennan Manning says, “We are the beggars at the foot of God’s door.” In the end, I would contend that we should be beggars at the foot of the cross. If we find ourselves in that position, we will find a God of love who has satisfied his holy wrath and judgment on his own Son. We will find a God, the God, who never turns away a beggar.

The Monday Muse: Educational Rights

It has been far too long since my last post. We traveled up to Michigan last Thursday night after work. Since it was in the midst of the busy time of the month at work, I had to work long hours so we could take off on Thursday. I’m still trying to get caught up on everything. So for the second straight week, I bring you The Monday Muse on Tuesday. How about this:

Should parents have the right to choose how they want to educate their children (homeschool, private, public)?

Before you answer, I would encourage you to check out some of the articles that Denny Burk has posted addressing the California appeals court controversy.

Do you think churches should have regular evaluations of the worship gatherings? Why or why not?
