Vick’s Back in the Game

Vick Signs With EaglesSeveral reports are coming in that Michael Vick has signed a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Some people might see this as a strange move for a team like the Eagles. Personally, I think it is a good move for the Eagles and for Vick. The Eagles are getting a guy who is extremely talented and has a lot to prove. Vick is walking into a stable team with a classy QB who can help him continue to grow as a person. Of course, this all assumes that we like the idea of Vick being allowed to play professional football once again. So what do you think?

Should Michael Vick be allowed to play pro football? Are you for it or against it?

For my own part…I think Vick should be given a second chance. He has certainly paid the consequences for his sin. Those consequences may follow him for the rest of his life in some form or fashion. But I believe forgiveness is an appropriate response to a humbled and humiliated man. As a Christian, I think we must be willing to offer forgiveness since we too have been forgiven for all of our sins. I’m pretty tired (and annoyed) by all of the PETA people who take every opportunity to rub Vick’s misdeeds in his face. If the shoe were on the other foot (regarding some other issue), I think those same people would ask for a little mercy and hope to receive it. Self-righteousness is the enemy of forgiveness.

Welcome back Mr. Vick. More than football glory, I hope you gain the hope of eternal life and the joy of forgiveness through Jesus Christ.

The Monday Muse: Thanksgiving Traditions

Having already participated (which means stuffed my face) in four Thanksgiving meals, I am seeing turkey day as more of a week long celebration than a one day event. I am set to break a personal record for more meals and most weight gained in a single holiday. One thing I enjoy about getting together with friends for Thanksgiving is hearing about all of the different family traditions for this holiday. Some families play flag football or board games while others enjoy a long nap in front of TV watching the Detroit Lions get crushed again. My family doesn’t really have much of a tradition other than getting together for lunch and laying around the rest of the day. For us, it is a good time to just enjoy each other’s company and relax from the hectic schedule of normal life. So in honor of the Thanksgiving holiday this week, I want to hear about your family traditions.

What kind of Thanksgiving Day traditions does your family have?

Notre Dame Takes Down Michigan

Well…I got to watch my Fighting Irish put the hurt on Michigan by beating them 35-17. Yes…Saturday was a glorious day even if the conditions were less than ideal and the teams had fallen far from their historic status as college football giants. Notre Dame is already one win away from equaling their win total from last year. In the process, they have started the year undefeated. Granted, they have played two cream puff teams. San Diego St. was missing most of their regular defensive starters and Michigan is in the midst of a transition period that will probably extend past this year. In fact, this may well be one of the worst years in Michigan history when it is all said and done. Nevertheless, I will still stand up and cheer my golden domers to victory and enjoy their undefeated season while it lasts.

After opening the season with a comeback against a team missing most of its defense, I had figured this to be another tough year for Notre Dame. However, I think the offense showed some promise against Michigan even if the Wolverines are a terrible team. Golden Tate has emerged as a game changing player. If Clausen can become more mature and consistent in his play then those two players can be a special tandem someday. No matter how much I am enjoying this victorious moment, it will be brief. After watching USC dismantle Ohio State, I realize that the annual Trojan-Fighting Irish game will most likely be a blowout of epic proportions. I’m predicting that USC may very well roll up 50+ points on the Irish. I’m not looking forward to that game.

But for now the Irish are 2-0 so I’ll take pleasure in this moment while it lasts. Go Irish!

One of Football’s Wildest Finishes

This is the end of a Division III football game between Trinity and Milsap. I have never seen that many laterals. It is truly amazing. Check it out…

Do you think churches should have regular evaluations of the worship gatherings? Why or why not?
