The Monday Muse: Evolution

A month or so ago, Annie and I went with our friends Matt and Steph to see the documentary on Intelligent Design called Expelled. I am still planning on sharing a few thoughts from that experience, but it did give me a good Monday Muse question. So here goes…

Can a Christian honestly believe in evolution? Is Christianity and evolution compatible?

I have heard of several Christian scientists (among others) who believe in evolution in some form. The most prominent person I am familiar with who believes in evolution is Alister McGrath (if I am not mistaken on that point). So it seems that people find some compatibility between the two. Can that be possible? Now it’s your turn…

The Monday Muse: Contextualization

There are several buzz words that have emerged in recent years within the Christian community. Emerging, emergent, relative, missional, postmodern…all words that will commonly be mentioned in conversations about ministry in the 21st century. Frequent many Christian blogs and you will find several occurrences of these words. Another such word is contextualization. This word is born out of a particular question. How do we effectively communicate the gospel within the context of our communities, cultures, and lives? It is an extremely valid question that has been asked by missionaries for many years. It has often been ignored by the church within the American culture. The assumption has been made that American culture is homogeneous. It is all the same. If this is true, then a canned product can be used by every American church to reach its community.

However, this is a grave error. American culture is extremely diverse. Smalltown Indiana is very different than inner city New York. This means that a canned product will not be sufficient. In fact, a canned product may prove to be harmful. Each church, each believer needs to thoughtfully consider the make up of its surrounding community and find ways of communicating the gospel in a way that connects with people within that context. So we must be open to people using different methods in different locations. But can there be a danger to such openness, critical evaluation, and willingness to change? So here’s what I’m getting at:

At what point does contextualization cross the line into compromise?

The Monday Muse: Useless Inventions

A couple of weeks ago I was thinking about all of the pointless inventions that litter the shelves of stores across the world. Some inventions are so pointless that it is almost frustrating. Some of them actually make life more difficult in one way or another. Most of the time we tolerate and celebrate these inventions because they are the latest trend in fashion and cool or they seemingly make things in life go a little smoother. My question to you is this:

What is the most pointless, useless, or frustrating invention that you use or come into contact with on a regular basis?

My vote…men’s button fly jeans. I’m not going into great detail on this but I will say that men’s button fly jeans are absolutely worthless. Who came up with the bright idea to put buttons on the fly of guy’s jeans? SERIOUSLY! Do they look any cooler with buttons instead of a zipper? No. Are they annoying and functionally frustrating? Yes. Do I have more than one pair of button fly jeans? Yes. So what does that say about me? Hmmm…

So let’s get rid of button fly jeans. They are not cooler. They are not more functional or practical. They are completely pointless in comparison to a zipper.

Ok, your turn.

The Monday Muse: Church Programs

Following a good discussion on evangelism last week and the prompting of my friend Matt, this week’s question builds from where we left off.

Do church programs help or hurt efforts to promote godliness in our everyday lives?

I posed this question at the end of last week’s discussion in regards to evangelism. To take it a little further, I want to apply it to many other areas. Do programs help or hurt our efforts to promote healthy time in the Word, prayer, meditation on Scripture, evangelism, and service in our everyday lives? This is a wide open question so feel free to be as thorough as you like. And as always, be sure to support your claim.

The Monday Muse: NCAA Tournament

7921596_18_2.jpgI should seriously start calling this The Tuesday Muse. I have been a little busy lately so I haven’t been keeping up as faithfully with my posts. Annie and I are in the midst of making some big life decisions so pray that the Lord will give us guidance and discernment.

Ok…on to question of the week. Since NCAA bracketology is in full effect, I thought up a two part question dealing with this year’s tournament.

1. Who will be the 2008 NCAA Basketball Champion?

2. Who is this year’s sleeper team?

In Part 1, you have to make your case for who you think will take home the trophy. I don’t just want to know who but why. In Part 2, you need to give us the team that you think could make an unexpected run deep into the tournament. Like Part 1, you need to also give us the reason.

Alright, you have your questions. Now…state your case.

The Monday Muse

Do you think churches should have regular evaluations of the worship gatherings? Why or why not?
